File Garbage Can For Windows 95 & 3.1
07/18/97
REASON
Ordinary DOS and Windows file deletes are NOT secure. The file is
merely marked as deleted but the data in the file is still sitting
on the disk. Any undelete program or disk scan program can access the
data on the disk. It remains that way until another file happens to
overwrite the disk area.
Garbage Can will take care of the security problem that occurs with
an ordinary file delete. We GUARANTEE the deleted file can NOT be
recovered.
STAND_ALONE VERSION (CAN32.EXE)
Windows 95 version. Allows processing of long file names.
STAND-ALONE VERSION (CAN16.EXE)
It allows you to 'Drag And Drop' files from the Windows File Manager
program on to the minimized icon. Any file dragged on to
the icon will then be processed according to the way you have the
program options set.
UPDATES
July 1997
(1) Add dialog tips - User can turn option on/off. (2) The folder
(directory) structure will be saved during file deletes - User
can turn option on/off. (3) Program will return to desktop taskbar
after a file delete - User can turn option on/off. (4) Program
screen size is saved upon quitting. (5) Fix program screen draw
location problem. Older versions could cause the program to be
drawn off the desktop, making it appear that the program was not
working. (6) Program options are now set in a tabbed dialog box
(property sheet) instead of menu selections. (7) User can
now turn the list of deleted files on/off. (8) User can now
turn the toolbar on/off. (9) Toolbar is now dockable. (10) User
can now turn the status bar on/off. (11) Convert C code to C++.
(12) Change from Borland to Microsoft compiler. (13) Drop File
Manager version (canf16.dll) of Garbage Can. (14) Update
documentation to reflect new Internet provider. New addresses
are now:
denam@kagi.com
denam@navicom.com
http://www.kagi.com/denam
http://www.navicom.com/~denam
http://navicom.com/~denam/gc0797.zip (For direct file download)
January 1997
(1) Add listbox to main screen. This allows a list of deleted
files to be displayed. This list is NOT saved and is destroyed
when you exit the program. (2) Move security level notification
from main screen to status window. (3) Add Directory Delete
menu explaination. (4) Add option that keeps Garbage Can the
top most program. In other words, other programs will not be
displayed over the top of Garbage Can.
December 1996
(1) Display security level on main screen. (2) Change way
internal security flag is stored/retrieved in memory.
(3) I goofed. The 60 day trial period mentioned in the
November 1996 version was not removed. This version REALLY
has it removed.
November 1996
(1) Remove Shift Key option. This option could cause a file
to be accidently deleted at a lower level of security than
the user desired. (2) Add registration program that allows
registering via the Internet by using Visa, Master Card,
American Express, or First Virtual accounts. (3) Earlier versions
would quit working after 60 days trial period. This version
removed that feature. It now merely displays a reminder to
register. (4) If user was dragging files from the Explorer
program, Garbage Can informational message dialogs might appear
on the taskbar instead of the desktop. This was because Garbage
Can was not the top most program. This problem was fixed by
forcing Garbage Can to the top, if a message box is displayed.
May 1996
Internet provider made changes to their file servers. The
WWW and FTP address were changed. Update documentation and
About dialog so they reflect the new addresses. Locations
are now:
http://www.cyberhighway.net/~denam
ftp://ftp.cyberhighway.net/users/d/denam
April 1996
Add directory (and all sub-directories & files) deletes to
Drag & Drop feature. Modify splash dialog so user can see
what files are being deleted. Adopt Trialware instead of
Shareware. Add 'Planned Future Upgrades' to documentation.
March 1996
Add toolbar to program.
February 1996
Allow user to save the directory where the last file was
deleted. On next File Dialog Box delete, the directory
will be displayed. Window 3.1 version was NOT updated.
January 1996
Convert to Windows 95 format. Include Window 3.1 version.
May 1995 (Last Windows 3.1 version)
Fix problem that caused the Garbage Can menu not to appear
in the File Manager version (CANF16.DLL). Fix problem that
caused the icon color menu selections to remain unchecked
in the standalone version (CAN16.EXE).
April 1995
Add 3 different colored icons and allow the user to select
the icon that is displayed on the desktop. Increase speed
of delete routines. Add routines that allow the user to
press a shift key to change the default security level to
the lowest level (and fastest) security level. Add
registration routines.
July 1994
Add another level of security that exceeds DoD requirements.
Drop Windows 3.0 version. Add DLL version that attachs itself
to the File Manager. Add install program.
February 1994
Add another level of security that takes care of the
slack area. Add info about DoubleSpace.
September 1993
Add another level of security. Remove command-line function
and replace it with a initialization file.
April 1993
Do a couple of screen clean ups. Add BWCC.DLL to Zip file.
October 1992
Change File 'Open...' to File 'Delete...'. Create second version
for Windows 3.1 Zip file now contains Garbage0.exe (for Windows
3.0 & 3.1) and Garbage1.exe (for Windows 3.1)
July 1991
Program can now be started as an inactive icon from the command
line.
July 1991
'Secure Delete' option added to menu. Command line option was also
added to program.
July 1991
Date field added to About dialog. Also, cursor now changes to
hourglass during file delete. This version was not released
to the public.
July 1991
First release. Uploaded to CompuServe and a local BBS in
Salem, Oregon. If there is no date in the About dialog,
you have the first version.
VERSION NUMBERS
We maintain no version number since we can not seem to keep track
of them anyway. We track our projects by date. The date that appears
on this documentation and in the 'About' dialog is the release date.
SHAREWARE
Garbage Can is distributed as Shareware. As such, you have a chance
to review the program to determine if it fits your needs. This does
not mean the program is free. You are expected to pay the $19.95
fee to register your program if you continue to use it.
You may copy and distribute this program as a single entity but
you must leave ALL files intact. You may not modify, delete, or
rename them without prior consent from Denam Systems.
